DAWN STALEY STATUE UNVEILED IN COLUMBIA: A POWERFUL TRIBUTE TO A TRAILBLAZER, LEADER, AND ICON

A historic moment unfolded in downtown Columbia as the city unveiled a statue honoring legendary basketball coach Dawn Staley — not just for her incredible achievements on the court, but for her enduring legacy as a trailblazer, leader, and inspiration to millions.
The statue, situated in a prominent plaza near Colonial Life Arena, is the first of its kind in Columbia dedicated to a Black female coach, and it captures Staley mid-stride — a symbol of her unstoppable drive and influence far beyond basketball.
“This is more than just a statue,” said Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann during the unveiling ceremony, which drew hundreds of fans, athletes, and civic leaders. “It’s a symbol of courage, leadership, and breaking barriers. Dawn Staley didn’t just win games — she changed the game.”
Staley, head coach of the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team, has led the program to multiple national championships, elevated women’s sports in the South, and been a passionate voice for equality and empowerment. She was also a three-time Olympic gold medalist as a player and a gold medal-winning coach for Team USA.
In an emotional speech, Staley reflected on her journey from the streets of Philadelphia to becoming one of the most respected figures in sports.
“I never dreamed of a statue,” she said. “I dreamed of impact. I dreamed of making space for the next generation of women — especially young Black girls — to know their worth, to chase their greatness, and to never apologize for their ambition.”
Commissioned by the city in collaboration with the University of South Carolina and private donors, the statue stands as a permanent reminder of Staley’s influence on and off the court.
Fans and former players gathered after the ceremony to leave flowers, hand-written notes, and team memorabilia at the statue’s base — a testament to the lives she’s touched and the legacy that continues to grow.
