Dawn Staley Responds with Grace as MiLaysia Fulwiley Departs South Carolina
In a move that has captured the attention of college basketball fans nationwide, MiLaysia Fulwiley has announced her decision to leave the University of South Carolina, entering the transfer portal after two seasons under head coach Dawn Staley. The talented sophomore guard, known for her explosive style and clutch performances, now looks to continue her college career elsewhere — potentially with rival powerhouse LSU.
Fulwiley was a key contributor to South Carolina’s success, averaging 11.7 points per game and helping the Gamecocks complete a perfect 2023–24 season and capture the national title. Despite her on-court impact and strong fan following, questions emerged about her limited minutes in high-profile games, including the early-season loss to UCLA. That speculation only intensified when Fulwiley played a bench role during much of the postseason.
Head coach Dawn Staley, however, handled the departure with poise and class. “It’s her process,” Staley said when asked about Fulwiley’s decision. “MiLaysia and I are good… Our house is tight.” Her comments reflected a deep mutual respect between coach and player, even as their paths diverge.
Fulwiley echoed those sentiments, thanking Coach Staley and the South Carolina program for their support. “I’ll always be grateful for everything I learned here,” she said in a heartfelt social media post.
As Fulwiley prepares to take the next step in her journey, South Carolina is also reloading. Staley has added top transfer talent, including Florida State’s leading scorer Ta’Niya Latson and Mississippi State’s 6’6” center Madina Okot, ensuring that the Gamecocks remain a national contender.
While Fulwiley’s next move is still unfolding, one thing is certain: the rivalry between South Carolina and LSU is about to reach a whole new level.
