South Carolina Unveils Monument Honoring Gamecock Legend Kevin Long

Columbia, SC — In a moving ceremony attended by family, fans, and former teammates, the University of South Carolina today unveiled a bronze statue honoring Kevin Long, one of the greatest players in Gamecocks football history.

Long, who passed away earlier this week, made history in 1975 when he became the first player in South Carolina history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. A two-time All-American and a pioneering figure both on and off the field, Long remains a symbol of excellence, perseverance, and leadership for the Gamecock community.

The statue, positioned prominently outside Williams-Brice Stadium, depicts Long with his trademark calm expression, resting a hand on a football helmet adorned with the iconic Gamecock logo. Inscribed on the granite pedestal are the words:
“Kevin Long — First 1,000-Yard Rusher in Gamecock History — A True Pioneer.”

“Kevin Long was more than just an athlete. He was a trailblazer, a leader, and a Gamecock through and through,” said South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner. “This monument ensures that future generations will know his story and be inspired by his legacy.”

Former teammates and coaches remembered Long not only for his talent but for his humility and kindness. “Kevin made you want to be better — not just as a player, but as a person,” said former Gamecock quarterback Jeff Grantz.

The dedication ceremony closed with a moment of silence and the playing of the Gamecocks fight song, as the bronze figure of Kevin Long stood tall — a lasting tribute to a life that forever changed South Carolina football.
