“Travis Shumake Shifts Gears: Breaking Barriers as NHRA’s First Openly Gay Team Owner”

Trailblazer on the Track: Travis Shumake Makes History as NHRA’s First Openly Gay Team Owner

In a landmark moment for drag racing, Travis Shumake has officially become the first openly gay team owner in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). The announcement came during the NHRA Finals in Pomona, California, where Shumake stepped out of the driver’s seat to make room for veteran Gary Pritchett, who made his Top Fuel debut under Shumake’s team banner.

Shumake’s decision to transition from driver to owner marks a significant evolution in his racing career—and for representation in the sport. Known for his fearless driving and advocacy, Shumake faced adversity from the beginning, including protests during his 2022 debut in Topeka, Kansas. Nevertheless, he stayed the course and carved out a respected space within the NHRA community.

“I’ve always believed there’s room for everyone in motorsports,” Shumake said. “Being able to step into team ownership and open the door for more diverse talent is a dream come true.”

Beyond racing, Shumake has emerged as a powerful LGBTQ+ advocate. He was named to the Out 100 list in 2024 and honored as Stonewall Columbus Champion of Pride. His engagement to longtime partner Daryl added a personal milestone to a year of professional triumphs.

As Travis Shumake takes on his new role, he isn’t just steering a dragster—he’s steering a cultural shift in one of America’s most adrenaline-fueled sports.
