Ryan Gomes Donates $5 Million to Providence College Basketball Program

Providence, R.I. — In a significant gesture of gratitude and commitment to the next generation, former NBA forward and Providence Friars legend Ryan Gomes has pledged a $5 million donation to Providence College’s men’s basketball program.

Gomes, who starred for the Friars in the early 2000s and later enjoyed a productive career in the NBA, is one of the most decorated players in the school’s history. The donation will support facility upgrades, recruiting efforts, and player development initiatives, according to the college’s athletic department.

“Providence College gave me the platform to chase my dreams,” Gomes said in a statement. “This is my way of giving back to a community that believed in me from the start. I want the next generation of Friars to have every opportunity to succeed both on and off the court.”

During his time at Providence, Gomes was a two-time All-Big East selection and earned consensus First-Team All-American honors in 2004. He ranks among the program’s all-time leaders in scoring and rebounding. Drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2005, Gomes played seven seasons in the NBA and has remained closely tied to the sport through youth development programs and coaching.

Now active in philanthropy and player mentorship, Gomes’ gift marks one of the largest ever made by a former Friars athlete. Providence athletic director Steve Napolillo praised the move, calling it “a transformational moment for our program.”

“Ryan’s generosity is not only a reflection of his success, but of his deep character and commitment to the values of Providence College,” Napolillo said. “This investment will empower our student-athletes for years to come.”

Construction on upgrades funded by the donation is expected to begin later this year.
