Netflix and Hulu Team Up for Groundbreaking Black Sabbath Documentary Release
A major moment in music history is coming to the screen as Netflix and Hulu jointly announce the release of a landmark documentary: “Black Sabbath: Iron Shadows – The Story of Metal’s Dark Architects.”
Set to debut simultaneously on both platforms this fall, the documentary promises to deliver the most in-depth look yet at the legendary British band, credited with inventing heavy metal and shaping generations of rock and metal musicians.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Asif Kapadia, the doc blends rare archival footage, never-before-heard interviews, unseen backstage moments, and powerful modern-day reflections from Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and commentary on Bill Ward’s absence during key periods of the band’s journey.
The film traces Black Sabbath’s rise from the industrial streets of Birmingham to global stardom, through decades of breakups, reunions, and reinvention, culminating in their emotional farewell tour in 2017. Fans can expect candid insights into the band’s musical genius, struggles with addiction, creative conflicts, and enduring legacy.
> “Sabbath didn’t just create a genre — they created a movement,” said Kapadia in a press statement. “This is their story told with raw honesty, epic sound, and a sense of reverence.”
The joint release marks the first time Netflix and Hulu have co-distributed a major music documentary, a move industry insiders say reflects the cross-generational, global impact of Black Sabbath’s influence.
The documentary will be available in multiple languages, with a limited theatrical run in select IMAX theaters before its streaming release.
Fans can also look forward to a special companion album and Q&A events featuring the surviving members, with Ozzy Osbourne teasing a surprise appearance.
