Fatal Crash Near Bethany Beach Claims Life of Rehoboth Man

A tragic accident on Coastal Highway just north of Bethany Beach has claimed the life of an 87-year-old man from Rehoboth Beach.

The collision occurred on Friday, April 19, 2024, at approximately 6:58 p.m., along Route 1 just south of Dune Road. According to the Delaware State Police, a Ford F-350 pickup truck towing a trailer was traveling south in the right lane when a Jaguar F-Type, also heading south, lost control and crashed into the trailer.

The impact caused the trailer to detach and overturn, though the truck’s driver, a 61-year-old man, and his 59-year-old passenger, both from Drums, Pennsylvania, were unharmed.

The driver of the Jaguar, 87-year-old John Medaris, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, Medaris succumbed to his injuries and died on Sunday, April 21, 2024.

The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit is actively investigating the crash. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. No charges have been filed at this time as the investigation continues.
