Tragic Boating Accident Claims Life of West Virginia Man at Indian River Inlet
What began as a peaceful fishing trip turned tragic Thursday afternoon when a 68-year-old West Virginia man lost his life in a boating incident near South Shore Marina.
Authorities have identified the victim as Donald M. Cutsail Jr., who was fishing with his wife and young granddaughter when the accident occurred around 2:30 PM.
According to emergency responders, Cutsail’s fishing line became tangled in the boat’s motor. In an effort to free the line, he entered the water—but was quickly overpowered by the inlet’s strong tidal currents, which are notoriously unpredictable. Though he remained near the boat, he was unable to climb back aboard.
His wife immediately radioed for help, prompting a swift response from multiple agencies including Delaware State Parks, DNREC officers, EMS, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Rescuers were able to recover Cutsail and rushed him to Beebe Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
“Despite the quick response and rescue efforts, the victim succumbed to the conditions he encountered in the water,” a DNREC spokesperson said in a statement.

A Dangerous Stretch of Water
The Indian River Inlet, while popular with recreational anglers and boaters, has long been considered a high-risk area due to its narrow channel, unpredictable tides, and powerful currents. Officials stress that even experienced watermen can become overwhelmed when conditions suddenly change.
“This is a stark reminder of how quickly a routine day on the water can turn dangerous,” the spokesperson added.

Safety Call to Action
Following the incident, authorities reiterated the importance of wearing life jackets, staying onboard unless absolutely necessary, and using extreme caution when operating near boat motors.
Cutsail was remembered by family as a dedicated husband, loving grandfather, and avid fisherman who found joy in Delaware’s coastal waters.
The Delaware State Police and DNREC are continuing their investigation. No foul play is suspected.
If you are heading out on the water, officials urge you to review all safety protocols and ensure your vessel is equipped with life-saving devices.
