This past weekend, Hurts quietly made headlines when he fulfilled a lifelong promise to his late grandmother, Lorraine Hurts, who passed away last month at the age of 84. The two shared a deep bond, forged in his childhood years when she would babysit him while his parents worked long coaching hours.
“She was the heart of our family,” Hurts said in a tearful statement. “Every time I faced a challenge, I’d think of her telling me to ‘keep my head down and heart strong.’ I promised her I’d always remember where I came from—and never forget her love.”
Lorraine had one wish before she passed: to see her family home in Channelview, Texas, restored. The small house, worn with time and weather, was where Hurts spent many of his earliest days—throwing footballs in the backyard, sharing cornbread dinners, and listening to gospel music in the kitchen.
After her passing, Hurts funded and helped oversee a full renovation of the home, unveiling it to his family this weekend in a private ceremony. The event, though joyful, was filled with emotion.
