Ta’Niya Latson and Raven Johnson Reunite at South Carolina, Rekindling Westlake Magic
Columbia, S.C. — In a headline-grabbing move that has energized the women’s college basketball scene, Ta’Niya Latson is transferring from Florida State to the University of South Carolina, reuniting with her former high school teammate Raven Johnson. The two once lit up the courts together at Atlanta’s Westlake High School — and now, they’ll look to do it again in Garnet and Black.
Latson, one of the most electrifying scorers in the country, averaged over 25 points per game during the 2024–25 season and was widely considered the top player in the transfer portal. Her decision to join Dawn Staley’s powerhouse program adds another layer of firepower to a Gamecocks squad that reached the national championship game this past season.
Her reunion with Johnson is more than just a feel-good story. The duo led Westlake to multiple state titles and a GEICO Nationals championship, combining Latson’s relentless scoring with Johnson’s court vision and lockdown defense. Their chemistry was undeniable in high school — and now they’ll have a chance to recreate it on one of the biggest stages in college basketball.
“Ta’Niya is a game-changer,” said South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley. “Bringing her here not only adds an elite scorer to our team but also reunites her with Raven, someone who understands her game on a deep level. That kind of synergy is rare, and we’re excited to see it unfold.”
Johnson, a veteran leader for the Gamecocks, has already proven herself as a floor general with championship pedigree. With Latson now by her side, South Carolina could be looking at the most dangerous backcourt in the country.
As the 2025–26 season approaches, expectations will be sky-high in Columbia. And if Latson and Johnson can recapture the magic of their Westlake days, the rest of the NCAA better be on notice.
