CLUB STATEMENT: Gunnar Henderson Scattered Hearts Again As Season Debut Against Kansas City Has Just Be Suspended Amid Fresh Injury Woes

Gunnar Henderson’s Season Debut Delayed as Orioles Star Continues Injury Recovery

BALTIMORE — Baltimore Orioles fans will have to wait a little longer for the highly anticipated season debut of star shortstop Gunnar Henderson. The 23-year-old’s return to the lineup has been delayed due to ongoing recovery from a right intercostal strain, which he sustained during spring training.

Manager Brandon Hyde confirmed that Henderson, who was expected to make his debut against the Kansas City Royals this Thursday, will not be in the lineup. However, Hyde remains optimistic about Henderson’s return, stating the star shortstop is “probable” for the upcoming series, with hopes of seeing him back on the field by Friday. Henderson has been rehabbing since late February and recently completed a five-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk. In those games, he hit .263, with two home runs and four RBIs, showing signs of regaining his form.

Henderson’s absence has been noticeable, though the Orioles have managed a 3-4 record in the opening stretch of the season. The team has displayed offensive flashes, scoring eight or more runs in four games, though their struggles were evident in a recent 8-0 shutout loss to the Boston Red Sox. The Orioles are eager for Henderson’s return, as his bat and defensive prowess are crucial for the team’s success.

In 2024, Henderson had a breakout season, slashing .281 with 37 home runs, 92 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases, finishing fourth in American League MVP voting. His return is highly anticipated as the Orioles look to build on their young core and make a push for the playoffs in 2025.

As the team continues to navigate Henderson’s recovery, fans are hopeful that the star shortstop will soon rejoin the lineup to help drive Baltimore’s success.
