PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Former Providence College star Ryan Gomes has officially returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach under head coach Kim English, the school announced last month. Gomes, who starred for the Friars from 2001–2005 and went on to play eight seasons in the NBA, brings high-level experience, deep program ties, and a winning pedigree to the sidelines.

Gomes ranks among the greatest players in Providence history—one of only two Friars to ever tally over 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. His decorated career included Big East honors, a 2004 All-American selection, and a second-round pick by the Boston Celtics in the 2005 NBA Draft. He averaged 10.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game during his pro career, suiting up for the Celtics, Timberwolves, and Clippers.

Following his playing days, Gomes entered the coaching ranks with stops at the Long Island Nets, Overtime Elite, and most recently with the Portland Trail Blazers as a player development coach. His return to Providence marks both a homecoming and a major statement of intent from Coach English and the program.

“Ryan has had a positive impact throughout his basketball journey, and we’re thrilled to welcome him back to Friartown,” English said in a statement. “His connection to this university, his pro experience, and his passion for mentoring young players make him an ideal fit for our staff.”

Gomes called the opportunity “a surreal experience” and expressed deep pride in returning to help the program that shaped him.

Why It Matters:

Recruiting boost: A legendary alum on staff helps sell the program to recruits looking for a path to the NBA.

Player development: Gomes’s NBA experience will be vital for developing Providence’s young talent.

Program continuity: His return ties the past and present, reinforcing the Friars’ tradition of excellence.

At just 42, Gomes also appears to be building toward a future head coaching role. For now, his impact is expected to be immediate—on the court, in the locker room, and on the recruiting trail.

Providence basketball just got a lot more excited
