Elderly Woman Tragically Killed in Road Sweeper Collision in Batley Town Centre

A tragic incident unfolded this morning in Batley town centre as an elderly woman lost her life after being struck by a road sweeping vehicle.

Emergency services rushed to Commercial Street around 9:55 a.m., following reports that a pedestrian, a woman in her 70s, had been hit by a council-operated road sweeper. Despite the rapid response of paramedics, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the sweeping vehicle, employed by Kirklees Council, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is currently in police custody as investigations continue.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed:

> “We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has relevant dashcam footage to come forward. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and all those affected.”

Kirklees Council released a statement expressing condolences:

> “We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the woman’s family and friends. We are working closely with police to assist with their investigation.”

The area was cordoned off for several hours as collision investigators examined the scene. Local businesses were temporarily affected, and traffic diversions were put in place.
