BREAKING NEWS: Bronze Statue of Sam Mikulak Unveiled at University of Michigan

In a moment that will go down in University of Michigan history, a life-size bronze statue of legendary gymnast Sam Mikulak was unveiled this afternoon outside the Newt Loken Gymnastics Training Center in Ann Arbor.

The emotional ceremony was attended by Mikulak himself, his former teammates, coaches, family, and hundreds of fans and students who came to honor one of the most iconic athletes in collegiate gymnastics history.

> “This isn’t just a statue,” said University President Santa Ono. “It’s a tribute to excellence, perseverance, and the Michigan spirit. Sam is the embodiment of all three.”

Mikulak, a seven-time NCAA champion and six-time U.S. all-around national champion, competed for the Michigan Wolverines from 2010 to 2014, helping lead the team to two national championships (2010 and 2013). Known for his artistry, power, and leadership, Mikulak set a new standard for men’s college gymnastics and went on to represent Team USA in three Olympic Games.

The statue, sculpted by renowned artist Annette Freeman, captures Mikulak mid-routine on the pommel horse—his signature event. The base is engraved with his most notable achievements and the words: “Once a Wolverine, Always a Champion.”

Visibly moved, Mikulak addressed the crowd:

> “I never imagined I’d be honored like this. This university shaped me into the athlete and man I am today. I hope this statue inspires future Wolverines to chase greatness every single day.”

Following the unveiling, the Michigan Marching Band played “Hail to the Victors” as fans took photos and alumni shared memories of watching Mikulak’s legendary routines in Cliff Keen Arena.

Athletic Director Warde Manuel hinted that more tributes could come in the future:

> “When you have an athlete who redefined a sport the way Sam did, one statue might not be enough.”

The statue will remain a permanent fixture outside the gymnastics facility, serving as a reminder of the golden era of Michigan gymnastics and the legacy of one of its greatest stars.
