BREAKING NEWS: Two-Vehicle Crash in Newark’s West Side Sends One to Hospital

A serious two-vehicle crash disrupted Newark’s West Side Friday morning, sending at least one person to the hospital and drawing a large emergency response to the intersection of South 12th Street and 15th Avenue.

According to Newark Police and eyewitness reports, the collision occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m., when a black SUV traveling westbound on 15th Avenue reportedly ran a stop sign and collided with a silver sedan heading north on South 12th Street. The impact left the sedan pinned against a light pole, while the SUV came to rest on the sidewalk, narrowly missing pedestrians.

Emergency Medical Services responded within minutes. A 34-year-old woman, the driver of the sedan, was transported to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. The driver of the SUV, a man in his 40s, was treated at the scene and declined transport.

Witnesses described a loud crash and chaotic aftermath. “I heard a big bang and came out to see the SUV smoking and the other car just crushed,” said Marcus Allen, a local resident. “It’s a miracle no one on the sidewalk got hit.”

The Newark Police Department’s Crash Investigation Unit closed off the intersection for over two hours as they gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses. Officials have not released the names of those involved, but say the SUV driver may face citations pending the outcome of the investigation.

The area, home to schools and community centers, has seen several traffic incidents over the past year, prompting calls for better signage and speed controls. Local Councilwoman Tanya Fields has renewed her push for a traffic camera program and stricter enforcement in the area.

“This could’ve been so much worse,” she said in a statement. “We need to prioritize pedestrian safety, especially in residential corridors like this one.”
