Heartbreaking Loss in NASCAR: Beloved Crew Chief Alan Gustafson Passes Away Unexpectedly

Charlotte, NC – June 1, 2025 — The NASCAR community is mourning the sudden and tragic passing of Alan Gustafson, longtime crew chief for Hendrick Motorsports and one of the sport’s most respected minds. Gustafson, 49, reportedly died late Saturday night due to a cardiac event at his home in North Carolina, according to a statement released by the team.

Known for his calm leadership and deep racing intelligence, Gustafson was a pillar behind the success of multiple NASCAR legends, including Jeff Gordon and Chase Elliott. His ability to foster both competitive excellence and genuine camaraderie earned him admiration throughout the garage.

Team owner Rick Hendrick released an emotional statement Sunday morning:

“Alan was more than a crew chief — he was family. His dedication, brilliance, and heart shaped the careers of so many. We’ve lost a legend, and more importantly, a dear friend.”

Gustafson began his NASCAR career as an engineer before rising through the ranks to become one of the most successful and enduring crew chiefs of the modern era. His strategic mind and steady presence helped deliver countless wins and a Cup Series championship with Elliott in 2020.

Chase Elliott, visibly emotional during a brief media appearance, said:

“He believed in me before I truly believed in myself. He was my mentor, my coach, and a huge part of my life. I can’t imagine racing without him.”

Flags flew at half-staff at Charlotte Motor Speedway this morning, and teams throughout the paddock are expected to honor Gustafson in next weekend’s race at Sonoma with black armbands and decals bearing his initials.

As the NASCAR world grapples with this heartbreaking loss, tributes continue to pour in from fans, drivers, and teams across the country. Alan Gustafson leaves behind a lasting legacy — not just in the record books, but in the hearts of all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Shannon, and their two children.
