Basketball Star Alex Wilson Announces Surprise Retirement After Devastating Injury
Story:
In a heartbreaking development for Australian basketball, two-time WNBL champion and 3×3 international standout Alex Wilson has announced her retirement from professional basketball following a serious knee injury sustained during training with the Mandurah Magic.
Wilson, 31, suffered a complete ACL tear and additional ligament damage last week while preparing for the upcoming NBL1 West playoffs. Doctors confirmed the severity of the injury would require surgery and an 18-month recovery period, effectively ending her playing career.
“I’ve given everything to this game, and it’s given so much back,” Wilson said tearfully at a press conference in Adelaide. “But after talking with my doctors and family, I know this is the right moment to step away. I never imagined it would end like this.”
Widely regarded as one of the fiercest guards in the WNBL, Wilson’s accolades include two league titles, Rookie of the Year honors, and a starring role in Australia’s 3×3 campaigns, where she claimed back-to-back MVP titles in the FIBA Asia Cup.
Tributes have poured in from teammates, coaches, and fans across Australia. Sydney Uni Flames head coach Cheryl Chambers called Wilson “a fearless competitor and a brilliant teammate,” adding, “the sport won’t be the same without her on the court.”
Wilson hinted at future involvement in coaching or youth development, saying, “The game isn’t done with me, and I’m not done with it.”
Her sudden exit leaves a noticeable gap in Australian basketball, but her legacy, both as a player and mentor, will continue to inspire the n
ext generation.
