Kevin O’Connell Announces Stephon Gilmore’s Return to Vikings and Coaching Role for Cornerbacks
In a move that is sure to inspire both players and fans alike, Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has officially confirmed that veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore will be returning to the team for the 2025 season. The five-time Pro Bowler, who was previously a key figure in the team’s secondary, is set to bring both his elite skills and valuable experience back to the Vikings’ defense.
Gilmore, who earned the title of NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, will not only play but also take on a coaching role to help mentor the Vikings’ younger cornerbacks. His leadership on and off the field is expected to have a lasting impact on the development of players such as Shaquill Griffin and the team’s promising rookie, Mekhi Blackmon.
“We are thrilled to welcome Stephon back to the team,” O’Connell said. “His knowledge of the game, his ability to read offenses, and his leadership are exactly what our young cornerbacks need. The chance to have him help coach and develop our guys is an invaluable resource as we aim to strengthen our defensive backfield.”
The Vikings’ defensive coordinator, Brian Flores, who coached Gilmore during his successful years with the New England Patriots, will also play a key role in utilizing Gilmore’s unique skill set. Flores plans to integrate Gilmore’s approach to defensive coverage and technique into the team’s defensive strategies.
Gilmore’s dual role will not only enhance the Vikings’ defense in the short term but also set the stage for long-term success by passing on vital techniques to the next generation of cornerbacks. With the return of this NFL legend, expectations for the Vikings’ defense are higher than ever.
