Dawn Staley Honored by Nelson Mandela Foundation, BBC, and Basketball Africa League for Global Youth Empowerment Efforts

Johannesburg, South Africa — South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley has received international acclaim for her groundbreaking work using basketball as a tool to combat youth poverty. In a joint announcement, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, BBC, and the Basketball Africa League (BAL) have recognized Staley’s global impact, praising her unwavering commitment to empowering underprivileged communities through the sport.

Best known for leading the South Carolina Gamecocks to multiple NCAA championships and mentoring stars like A’ja Wilson, Staley has also built a formidable legacy off the court. Through her youth basketball academies, scholarship initiatives, and overseas outreach programs—particularly in underserved regions of Africa and the U.S.—Staley has created opportunities for thousands of young people to access education, leadership training, and personal development.

“Dawn Staley embodies the spirit of Nelson Mandela—using sport as a powerful instrument for social justice and human dignity,” the Foundation said in its statement. “Her influence goes far beyond basketball courts; it reaches classrooms, homes, and communities in need of hope.”

The BBC highlighted Staley’s “visionary leadership in bridging sports and social development,” while the Basketball Africa League lauded her as a role model for aspiring young athletes across the continent. Staley recently collaborated with BAL on a pilot program in Senegal, where youth from low-income areas trained in both basketball fundamentals and financial literacy.

Staley responded to the honor with humility: “Basketball gave me purpose and power. I just want to give that back to every child who thinks the world has forgotten them.”

With her influence growing on the international stage, Dawn Staley continues to prove that coaching is just one part of her calling—transforming lives is the greater mission.
