Richard Petty Named First-Ever Niagara Falls Ambassador, Donates $500,000 to Wildlife Conservation
NASCAR legend Richard Petty, affectionately known as “The King,” was officially named the first-ever ambassador of Niagara Falls in a ceremony held Monday afternoon at Terrapin Point. Joined by members of the Petty family, including son Kyle Petty and grandson Austin Petty, the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion took center stage in a celebration that united motorsports history with environmental stewardship.
To mark the occasion, Petty donated $500,000 to the Niagara Falls Wildlife Restoration Initiative, a newly launched program focused on protecting native species and improving natural habitats within the Niagara Gorge and surrounding preserves.
> “Niagara Falls is one of the most powerful, breathtaking places on Earth,” Petty said. “It’s a true honor to be welcomed here not just as a visitor, but as someone who can give back to its beauty and the wildlife that depend on it.”
The donation will support ongoing efforts to restore the bald eagle population in the region, expand habitat corridors for foxes and bobcats, and fund an educational wildlife center near Whirlpool State Park.
Mayor Robert Restaino praised the Petty family for their legacy of giving: “The Petty name stands for excellence, heart, and dedication—values we cherish here in Niagara Falls. Richard’s leadership brings national attention to our conservation efforts, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”
The event also included an exhibit of historic Petty racing vehicles and a fundraising auction of autographed memorabilia, with all proceeds going toward local environmental projects.
The Petty family closed the day by visiting Horseshoe Falls, where Richard smiled and said, “I’ve driven fast all my life—but nothing moves like this place.”
