Steve Nash and Shawn Marion Announce Major Endowment to Support Phoenix Suns Community Programs
Franchise legends Steve Nash and Shawn Marion announced today the creation of a multi-million dollar endowment to support the Suns’ youth and community basketball initiatives across Arizona. The announcement was made during a special ceremony at the Footprint Center, drawing former teammates, fans, and local leaders.
Nash and Marion, both pivotal figures in the Suns’ iconic “Seven Seconds or Less” era, said the endowment is focused on funding youth development programs, building community courts, and offering mentorship opportunities to underserved communities.
“Phoenix was where my NBA dreams came true,” Nash said. “This city embraced me, and it’s only right that we give back and help the next generation of players and leaders rise up.”
Marion, known as “The Matrix” during his playing days, added, “It’s not just about basketball skills. It’s about building confidence, leadership, and community pride. We want kids to believe they can achieve greatness in whatever path they choose.”
Both players left an indelible mark on the Suns’ franchise, with Nash earning two MVP awards and Marion earning four All-Star selections during their time in Phoenix.
Phoenix Suns CEO Josh Bartelstein and owner Mat Ishbia praised the gesture, calling it a “game-changing investment” in the franchise’s future impact off the court.
The endowment will officially begin supporting programs starting in 2025, ensuring that Nash and Marion’s legacy extends far beyond their time on the hardwood.
“This is about family, about community,” Nash said. “The Suns gave so much to us — now it’s time for us to give something lasting in return.”
