Notre Dame Star Hannah Hidalgo Brightens Spirits of Young Cancer Patient
South Bend, IN — April 16, 2025
Notre Dame basketball standout Hannah Hidalgo took time away from the court this week to make a special visit to Memorial Children’s Hospital, bringing smiles and inspiration to young patients battling serious illnesses.
Among those she met was 9-year-old Eli Thompson, a devoted basketball fan currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. Wearing a bright Notre Dame hoodie, Hidalgo surprised Eli with a signed basketball and team gear. The two shared laughs, stories, and even a quick discussion about his favorite moments from her freshman season.
“It means everything to meet someone like Hannah,” said Eli, smiling from his hospital bed. “She’s my hero.”
Hospital staff praised Hidalgo for her down-to-earth demeanor and uplifting presence. “She brought light and energy into the room,” said nurse Michelle Carter. “For kids like Eli, these moments are priceless.”
Hidalgo, who’s become a rising star in NCAA women’s basketball, said the visit was just as meaningful for her. “It puts everything into perspective,” she said. “Basketball is important, but these kids are the real fighters.”
As she left the hospital, Hidalgo promised Eli he’d have courtside seats waiting for him as soon as he’s well enough to attend a game. “He’s got a whole team behind him,” she said with a smile.
