Björn Borg Donates $50 Million to Legends Team Cup in Historic Gesture
April 8, 2025 — Stockholm, Sweden
Tennis legend Björn Borg has made headlines around the world after donating an astonishing $50 million to the Legends Team Cup, the newly established international tennis competition featuring retired superstars of the sport.
The donation, announced during a press conference in Stockholm, is the largest personal contribution ever made to a tennis event. Borg, a former 11-time Grand Slam champion, said the money will be used to promote the tournament globally, fund youth tennis programs tied to the event, and support retired players transitioning into coaching and mentoring roles.
“Tennis has given me everything,” Borg said. “The Legends Team Cup is about honoring the past while inspiring the future. I want this event to have a lasting legacy, and I believe this donation will help achieve that.”
The Legends Team Cup, of which Borg is the official Patron, has quickly gained popularity since its launch earlier this year. The trophy for the event is already named in his honor — the Björn Borg Trophy — and the tournament features 18 recently retired tennis greats from across the globe.
Organizers say the donation will fund state-of-the-art training facilities, community tennis outreach programs, and annual scholarships for promising young players from underprivileged backgrounds.
ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi praised Borg’s gesture, calling it “an extraordinary act of generosity that will change the landscape of tennis development for years to come.”
The first Legends Team Cup event is set to take place later this year in Monaco, with exhibitions planned across Europe, Asia, and North America.
