Jeremiah Smith Shatters Big Ten and Ohio State Freshman Records in Historic Rose Bowl Performance
PASADENA, Calif. — Ohio State’s electrifying freshman receiver, Jeremiah Smith, has officially cemented his name in both school and conference history books. Smith broke the Big Ten’s single-season record for touchdown receptions by a freshman with a stunning 45-yard score during the Buckeyes’ opening possession against Oregon in the Rose Bowl.
The record, previously held by Purdue’s Rondale Moore (12 touchdowns in 2018), now belongs to the 19-year-old phenom, who has redefined expectations for first-year players. Smith tied Moore’s mark during Ohio State’s College Football Playoff first-round victory over Tennessee and surpassed it with his record-breaking catch against Oregon.
Smith entered the Rose Bowl with an already-impressive freshman campaign: 63 receptions, 1,037 receiving yards, and 12 touchdown receptions, all surpassing Ohio State’s freshman records set by legendary receiver Cris Carter in 1984. Additionally, Smith has showcased his versatility with four rushing attempts for 47 yards and a rushing touchdown.
Against the Volunteers, Smith recorded six receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns, setting the stage for his historic Rose Bowl moment.
“Jeremiah’s work ethic and natural ability are beyond his years,” said Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. “He’s not just breaking records—he’s setting the standard for what it means to be a Buckeye.”
The Buckeyes hope to ride Smith’s momentum as they advance further in the College Football Playoff, aiming to secure their first national title since 2014. For now, Smith’s remarkable season continues to captivate fans and solidify his place as one of the brightest young stars in college football.
